Resurrecting the Classic Road Trip: All You Need to Know About Making it Fun and Exciting

This summer might not be filled with trips around the globe (though we’re still crossing our fingers), but that doesn’t mean we can’t make the most of these warm summer days! If you’re looking to travel this summer, but hoping to avoid airports and flights, we’ve got the perfect trip for you! Put on your favorite Spotify playlist, grab some trail mix, and get ready to resurrect the good old road trip!

To make your planning easy, we’ve put together the ultimate guide to your post-COVID road trip! We hope you enjoy!

Step One: Make a road trip bucket list

Between the beaches, mountain ranges, and vibrant cities, the U.S. is full of amazing locations accessible by car. Whether you’re looking for a one-day trip or are ready for a cross-country journey, you have plenty of options! Check out our recent blog on the top 10 U.S. destinations [link] to help you decide which locations are right for your unique travel preferences! Once you feel inspired, start a road trip bucket list full of every place you want to visit in the U.S. before you “kick the bucket.”

Step Two: Save your list online and find your route

Head to Google Maps and start marking these bucket list items under the “Your Places” feature. To start a list, you’ll need to go to the Google Maps menu, click “Your Places,” “Saved,” and the big plus sign. Name your list and start adding locations. Once you’re done, you can start mapping out a road trip route that will allow you to hit up as many of these spots as possible in your given timeline.

Step Three: Pick your stops along the way

When you’re “road tripping,” it’s important to remember that it’s just as much about the journey as it is the destination. A major benefit to road trips is being able to stop and see awesome things along the way. Picture this general route as the skeleton of your journey. Once you know the route you’ll take, it’s time to get to the fun part and pick what you’ll see along the way! While you’ll probably know your main spots along the way (see your bucket list), you’ll want to add to your plan in terms of where you’ll eat, drink, shop, and have fun! We suggest heading online to find the things you’ll want to see on the way. If you’re a coffee snob, google “Best coffee shops in [insert town/city],” if you’re a big hiker look up the best hikes, and so on!

In this day and age, it will be important that you do some extra research ahead of time to make sure the things you want to see and do aren’t closed due to COVID-19.

Step Four: Find fun places to stay along the way

Hours on end in the car can definitely take a toll on your body and your spirit, so be sure to prioritize where you’ll stay in between activities and long car rides. If you’re anything like us, you obsess over where you’ll rest your head at night, so whether it’s an epic campground, a cute Airbnb, or a swanky resort, do some research on the areas you’ll be traveling through to find something that will fit your needs and vacation tastes!

Again, it’s important to note that COVID-19 might lead to some restrictions when it comes to where you’ll stay, so remember to be flexible and enjoy the journey!

Step Five: Document the heck out of this trip

I mean, when else will you take an epic road trip in the middle of a pandemic! So, take a ton of photos and videos and inspire the rest of your friends and family on social media to get out there and have some fun this summer!
