TRIPP’s Guide to Traveling on a Budget

Travel comes in all shapes and sizes and here at Tripp, we’re passionate about making amazing travel experiences available to all budgets! In fact, we firmly believe that you can make incredible memories while traveling on a dime!

Here are our top tips for traveling on a budget this year!

1. Plan ahead and save

If you’re traveling on a budget, it’s important to plan ahead! First comes first — figure out what your budget really is. It’s really hard to plan a trip without knowing how much you’re willing (and able) to spend! If you’re able, plan far enough in advance so you can start saving up each month with your trip in mind. Once you have an amount set in stone, start planning out your accommodations, transportation, food budget, and activities. The more specific you can be, the better!

Oh, and be sure to leave a little wiggle room. If you’ve ever traveled before, you know that surprises do happen and it’s important to be prepared!

2. Pick affordable destinations

If you’re traveling on a budget, we recommend that you don’t start planning a luxurious trip to New York City or Paris. There are so many affordable destinations around the world (and even in your own country) that will provide memories to last a lifetime! Start researching cheap destinations and make a list of places that get your travel juices flowing!

3. Consider getting a travel rewards credit card

Warning! This tip is definitely not for everyone, but if you’re careful, getting a travel rewards credit card is an amazing way to travel while you’re on a budget. With travel rewards cards you’ll earn points with airlines and sometimes hotels just by spending money on things like groceries and gas. Most cards have a reward if you spend a certain amount within the first several months of signing up, so we recommend planning accordingly so your points will be available before you need to book your flights.

Again, it’s important to be careful with credit cards and be sure using this tip doesn’t get you into debt you can’t handle! Check out this list of 2020’s best travel credit cards.

4. Get creative with accommodations

Depending on where you decide to go, you’re probably not going to be able to afford a resort accommodation. Thankfully, there are so many options when it comes to places to stay around the world. Consider Airbnb or local hotels and hostels — don’t worry, there are a lot of really nice ones. You can even find free places to stay if you’re willing to work a bit! Sites like Workaway are perfect for those who are looking to travel for cheap while also connecting with locals and getting a unique experience while they explore!

5. Do as the locals do

Stray from tourist traps and head towards local establishments! Not only will you have a more authentic experience wherever you go, but you’ll also likely end up saving some money while you’re at it!

6. Find deals and happy hours

Eating out while you travel can definitely add up, so we recommend finding deals online or checking out some local spots for happy hour to save a few bucks when you’re able!

7. Find free experiences

Most destinations have incredible free activities and experiences if you look hard enough! Since this will be unique to your destination, we recommend a simple Google search or checking out some travel blogs to find the best free activities in the area. Lay on the beach, explore a park, or hit up a museum on a free day — there are so many fun things to do without spending a dime!

9. Use the help of an expert to save money

It might sound counterintuitive, but hiring someone to help you plan your trip is actually a great way to save money in the long run!
