London is for history buffs, Paris is for lovers, and Florence is for foodies, but when it comes to the budget traveler, these well-traveled European cities might not be the best fit. For those of you looking to explore on a dime, our advice is to take the road less traveled and discover the many affordable, hidden gems throughout Europe.
Not only will you save a pretty penny, but you’ll also skip the crowds and find yourself experiencing a more authentic side of Europe than most people ever get a chance to see. Check out our list of four of the most affordable, underrated cities in Europe!
1. Split, Croatia
Croatia is the perfect playground for budget travelers. Stunning mountain views serve as the backdrop to this bustling coastal city filled with art galleries, boutiques, cafes, and a vibrant nightlife scene. Split can be likened to some of the more popular Italian coastal towns, but for a fraction of the cost.
For history buffs, Diocletian’s Palace is a must-see. This historic mini-city dates back to 295 A.D. and is filled with winding paths, stunning courtyards, and historic treasures. With easy access to the Adriatic Sea, beach lovers will enjoy lounging on the sandy shores, exploring the coastline by boat, and visiting the many neighboring islands. After a long day of exploring, enjoy a sunset Mediterranean dinner of fresh fish and cheap wine.

2. Porto, Portugal
Like many of Europe’s most well-traveled cities, Porto is filled with charming cobbled-stone streets, stunning architecture, and a whole lot of wine. As the second largest city in Portugal, travelers often skip Porto and head straight to Lisbon. However, this smaller city offers a unique taste of Europe that you’d be remiss to not experience.
Known for the production of Port, Porto is a mecca for wine connoisseurs. Visitors can explore one of the many historic Port cellars, learn how to taste from the pros, or simply sip a glass of wine while taking in the majestic, hilly views of Porto. This vibrant city also has plenty to do aside from wine — enjoy a river cruise, bite into a famous Francesinha Sandwich, or take in the architecture of Porto’s many stately Baroque churches.

3. Budapest, Hungary
Rightfully named “Paris of the East,” Budapest is the perfect place for those looking for a romantic, history-filled European experience. For too long, this city was hiding behind the Iron Curtain, but since the fall of communism, Budapest has become a favorite destination for the less traditional travelers.
At the center of this capital city flows the Danube River, which was once the divider of the two cities of Buda and Pest. Now united, the river still serves as Budapest’s cultural center, boasting colorful markets, quaint cafes, and views of some of the city’s most popular attractions, such as St. Stephen’s Basilica, Matthias Church, the Hungarian Parliament Building. And after a long day of exploring, be sure to visit one of Budapest’s famous thermal baths.
